Martin Luther King (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American Baptist minister, activist, humanitarian and leader of the civil rights movement for African Americans. He is best known for his role in gaining civil rights through non-violent disobedience in accordance with his Christian beliefs.
King became a civil rights activist early in his career. In 1955 he led the Montgomery bus boycott and helped finance the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, of which he was the first president and at the head of that organization, King led the unsuccessful struggle against segregation in Albany, Georgia and helped organize non-violent protests in Birmingham, Alabama, events that have attracted the attention of the entire American public since television reported on the brutal response of the police.
